2025 Right Livelihood Laureate & Taiwan's Cyber Ambassador

Audrey Tang is a civic hacker, co-author of «Plurality» (with Glen Weyl) and the forthcoming «Civic AI» (with Caroline Green). She is an inaugural Senior Accelerator Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI and a 2026–2027 Carnegie Distinguished Fellow at Columbia SIPA's Institute of Global Politics.

She served as Taiwan's first Minister of Digital Affairs (2022–2024), preceded by six years as Minister without Portfolio for Digital Affairs (2016–2022), and is the world's first nonbinary cabinet minister. In 2025, Tang received the Right Livelihood Award — often called the Alternative Nobel — "for advancing the social use of digital technology to empower citizens, renew democracy and heal divides."

A child prodigy who practiced Taoism to manage a congenital heart condition, Tang left formal schooling at 14 to pursue self-education. By age 19, she was an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley and a leader in the free and open-source software communities, revitalizing the Haskell and Perl languages.

Tang was instrumental in the creation of g0v (gov-zero) and played a pivotal role in the 2014 Sunflower Movement, facilitating digital consensus-building during the occupation of Taiwan's legislature. As Digital Minister, she implemented radical transparency through participatory democracy platforms like vTaiwan and Join. Her tenure saw public trust in Taiwan's government rise from single digits to over 70%, driven by innovations such as the "Mask Map" during COVID-19 and defenses against cyber interference in the 2024 elections.

Through her current work, Tang extends Plurality from concept to infrastructure. In 2025 she co-launched ROOST — Robust Open Online Safety Tools — at the Paris AI Summit to build decentralized safety infrastructure for democracies. Across Asia, Europe, and the United States, governments and civic groups are adapting her playbook to local contexts. She describes her philosophy as becoming a "good enough ancestor," striving to leave future generations a wider canvas for democratic possibility.

神童として知られ、幼少期には先天性の心臓病と共に生きるため道家（タオイズム）を実践した。14歳で学校教育を離れ、独学を開始。19歳になる頃にはシリコンバレーで起業し、フリー・オープンソース・ソフトウェア・コミュニティのリーダーとして、プログラミング言語HaskellやPerlの再活性化を牽引した。

シビックテック・コミュニティ「g0v（ガブ・ゼロ）」の創設に尽力し、2014年のひまわり学生運動では、立法院占拠中にデジタル技術を用いた合意形成を促進する重要な役割を果たした。デジタル大臣としては、徹底的な透明性と、「vTaiwan」や「Join」などの参加型民主主義プラットフォームを導入した。コロナ禍における「マスクマップ」の開発や、2024年選挙におけるサイバー干渉からの防衛といった革新的な取り組みにより、在任中、台湾政府への国民の信頼度は一桁台から70%以上にまで劇的に回復した。

現在は、Plurality（多元性）の概念を実装可能なインフラへと展開している。2025年にはパリAIサミットにおいて、民主主義のための分散型安全インフラを構築するイニシアチブ「ROOST（Robust Open Online Safety Tools）」を共同で立ち上げた。アジア、ヨーロッパ、そして米国において、各国政府や市民団体がタン氏のアプローチを各地の文脈に合わせて応用している。タン氏は自身の哲学を「良き祖先（good enough ancestor）になること」と表現し、次世代に向けて民主主義の可能性というキャンバスを広げるべく活動を続けている。
